How many slides should an Instagram carousel have?

Instagram lets you post up to 20 slides. That does not mean you should. The right answer for most content sits between 6 and 10, and here is the reasoning.

What the swipe data rewards

Instagram treats each swipe as an engagement signal, and it can re-serve a carousel to the same person starting from a later slide if they did not finish it the first time. That second-chance mechanic is unique to carousels, and it works best when there are enough slides to leave something unfinished, but not so many that finishing feels like work.

Six to ten slides gives the algorithm room to resurface the post while keeping the completion rate high. Completion matters: a 20-slide carousel that most people abandon at slide 5 sends a worse signal than an 8-slide carousel most people finish.

A structure that fills the slides properly

A carousel is a tiny essay. The structure that consistently works:

  • Slide 1: the hook. A claim, a number, or a question that earns the first swipe.
  • Slide 2: the setup. Why this matters or what most people get wrong.
  • Slides 3 to 7: the substance. One point per slide, under 40 words each.
  • Slide 8: the payoff or summary. The line people screenshot.
  • Last slide: the call to action. Follow, save, comment, or a link in bio.

When longer carousels make sense

Step-by-step tutorials, listicles with genuinely distinct items, and swipe files can earn 12 to 20 slides, because each slide keeps delivering new value. The test is simple: if you removed a slide and nothing is lost, remove it. Padding to look comprehensive costs you completion rate.

Getting the structure without the effort

Scorper generates carousels with this structure built in: hook options first, one idea per slide, and an automatic follow CTA slide at the end. You pick the hook you like and the pacing is handled. The default output lands in the 6 to 10 slide range because that is what performs.

Common questions

Do 20-slide carousels get more reach?

Not inherently. Reach follows engagement quality: dwell time, swipes, completion, saves. A tight 8-slide post usually beats a padded 20-slide one.

Is a 2 or 3 slide carousel worth posting?

Yes, for before-and-after reveals or a single punchy idea with one supporting slide. You lose some of the resurfacing benefit, but a strong short carousel beats a stretched long one.

Should every carousel end with a CTA slide?

Almost always. It is the cheapest slide to make and it converts attention into follows. Scorper appends one automatically.
