Instagram carousel size: the 2026 guide

Instagram feed posts support three ratios: square (1:1, 1080 x 1080), portrait (4:5, 1080 x 1350), and landscape (1.91:1). For carousels, 4:5 portrait is the right choice in almost every case, because it takes up the most vertical screen space in the feed. More screen equals more attention, and attention is the entire fight.

Every slide in a carousel must share the same ratio. Instagram locks the ratio to the first image you add, and crops the rest to match, so mixing sizes means losing edges of your design.

Instagram stores images at up to 1080 pixels wide and compresses anything bigger. Upload smaller and it gets stretched; upload much bigger and the compression does unpredictable things to text edges. Exporting at exactly 1080 x 1350 gives the sharpest possible result for text-heavy slides, which is what carousels usually are.

When a carousel shows in the feed, the bottom of the image can be overlapped by the caption area on some surfaces, and the slide counter sits in the top right corner. Keep headline text inside roughly the middle 80% of the slide, and avoid putting anything essential in the top-right corner or the bottom 120 pixels.
